Google has taken the bold move of removing all .co.cc domain names from its internet rankings, as it bids to clamp down on malicious online activity.
Some 11 million websites using this domain name have been blocked by the search engine giant, after security concerns were raised.
Google said that the majority of websites using the .co.cc extension were "too spammy" and posed a genuine malware threat.
The domain, which is owned by a Korea-based freehost, has been subject to frequent criticisms about its low quality in the past.
Internet users are able to register domain names in bulk for as little as five pence a name, increasing the potential for exploitation by online fraudsters.
"To help protect users we recently modified systems to identify bulk subdomain services which are being abused," a spokesperson for Google stated.
"In some severe cases our systems may now flag the whole bulk domain."
From next year, the range of domain name suffixes is set to increase significantly from the current crop of 22 plus individual country codes.
ICANN is to welcome applications for generic top-level domain names between January 12th and April 12th, enabling organisations to customise their own web address extension.
