This past week has been quite eventfull. Normally, domain name news are very, very boring. Occasionally, a high profile sale, but mostly just the technical stuff. Not last week.
Australian Michael Gilmore has been receiving threats, because of "$500 million domain fraud". The gist of the story is this - the owners of parked domains use botnets to generate fake clicks for parked domains. I never take these 'death threats' stories seriously, but the article states that US Secret Service is involved. This means some serious shit is going on. The US Secret Service doesn't just protect presidents, they also deal with counterfeiting. The fraud must be really big to get their attention.
An obscure Canadian band may soon be one million richer, according to the Guardian. The reason? Their name - Tea Party and domain TeaParty.Com they've registered a long, long time ago, before American got crazy and people knew who Sarah Palin was. Lucky bastards.
In another news for Australia a "a schoolboy error lead to the loss of the most expensive .com.au domain". If you care to read the story, you'llfind out that no schoolboys are involved. Just another expired domain auction story with five zeros.
Quite a few newspapers ran a story Barns&Noble buying Borders.Com. Borders the bookstore chain has gone bankrupt and Borders.Com the domain was sold in a package of 'Border's intellectual property'. That included domain, trademarks and all that good stuff. Total price was over 15 million dollars.
What else? Vietnam has decided to sell .vn domains cheaper. PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals) is buying a XXX domain name. Just a regular PR stunt. Quite an eventful week. But dont' forget the most important news of them all - PickyDomains.com is world's first risk-free naming service. We already helped to find a business name for 1500+ clients and the best part - you pay ONLY if you like our work, so there is no risk involved.
