The web address gay.xxx has been sold to a porn production company for half a million dollars.
The domain name is the most expensive to be sold with the controversial new porn-only .xxx extension.
Although .xxx addresses are not yet being publicly sold, gay.xxx was one of a number of names being offered to companies in advance of open sale.

The .xxx domain has been opposed by pornographers, who argue that it will ghettoise sex websites.
Websites with the extension have already been banned in India, and the porn industry worries that other countries may follow suit.

Gay.xxx has been purchased by Corbin Fisher, a gay film company based in Las Vegas.

The $500,000 (£320,000) price tag is steep for an address with a new extension, but is dwarfed by the cost of the most expensive .com addresses.

Predictably, the most expensive domain name in history is believed to be sex.com, which sold for $13million last year.

ICM Registry, which controls the allocation of .xxx addresses, is being cautious about potential misuse of the extension.

They have compiled a secret list of 4,300 celebrities whose names will not be allowed to be used as .xxx addresses.

BritneySpears.xxx, BradPitt.xxx and DavidCameron.xxx are all on the list of banned domain names.

Even dead celebrities are protected by the rules - so MarilynMonroe.xxx and OsamaBinLaden.xxx will not be going up for sale.

The pornographic .xxx domain has been popular with companies. The addresses are selling at up to 40 per cent of their .com equivalents, whereas most other extensions go for less than 10 per cent of their .com version.
