Apple filed a complaint with the WIPO or the World Intellectual Property Organization over the domain name and discussion forum called the iPhone5.com (currently down). Yet, the company does not yet own or even control the name. Apple is very unpredictable as nobody can ever have sufficient clues on what it will do next. The latest report surrounds the iPhone5.com name which Apple has made a complaint with the WIPO.
As of this time, the iPhone line is only up to the iPhone 4S. However, the company is believed to be launching an iPhone 5 soon.
But, even prior to last year's iPhone 4S launch, several people anticipated the handset to be the 5th model. As a comparison, the iPad 3 that was widely expected by many ended up being referred to as just the new iPad.
Even if there are no specifications to be gathered from this, Apple's filing suggests at the very least that it is considering the name iPhone 5 for its soon to be launched handset. Or maybe, it just wants to remove the existence of the domain no matter what its upcoming device will be called.
Based from the WhoIs record, the iPhone5.com is a forum website that was created in the month of February 2008. It is clearly indicated in its copyright statement that it is not endorsing, sponsoring or even affiliating in any way with Apple and it was solely made for the purpose of knowledge and entertainment.
Because of worries that the site will be possibly shut down once Apple takes control of it, Morphius, one of its commenters, said that as members of the site prior to the iPhone 4S' release, they will stand their ground against Apple. He further adds that they have all the right to be iPhone's fans that is why they can discuss about it and they shouldn't be shut down.
The minimum filing page do not show when the complaint was filed by Apple. But, its case number seems to show that it happened within this year. Moreover, the heading decision of the filing indicates the label Case Active.
Just like several companies, Apple has fought many times to possess domain names in order to protect its products. An example of the previous complaints filed by Apple with the WIPO was in November. The purpose of that was to take control of seven domain names labeled as iPhone such as the iPhone4S.com and the iphonesex4s.com.
